The studio collective Achterhaus Ateliergemeinschaft e.V. offers two free/funded studio residences for 3 months each for one visual artist or an artist couple. The time slots are January-March 2025 & April-June 2025. The residence offers/provides a space to develop artistic projects to international artists (not based in Germany) in a focused environment and furthermore an opportunity to connect to local artists and Hamburg’s art scene.
Founded in 2013 by 36 artists, the collective moved into an administrative building of a former wallpaper factory which is located in the city district ‚Bahrenfeld‘ and is split into 25 studios and one residential apartment. Along with other artists the collective benefits from the districts‘ radical change, shaped by industry as well as residential areas. Aside from creating studio space, the collective strives to establish productive collaborations amongst different areas
Fine artists of all disciplines in visual arts, residing abroad, may apply.
Students may not apply.
– Rent-free residential apartment for 3 months
(1 living room/bedroom, 1 workroom, bathroom and corner kitchen)
– Funding of arrival and departure costs up to 1.000 Euro
– Living costs subsidy of 1.000 Euro per month

1. CV/résumé: With full contact details, information about training and an overview of artistic career so far.
2. Letter of motivation: Description of reasons for wanting to take part in the residence program, one A4 page maximum. Please mention if you prefer one of the time slots: Jan-March or April-June 2025.
3. Portfolio: Proof of artistic work so far in exclusively digital form.

The closing date for the residence grant is 1st of September 2024. The selection will be done by a jury of residential artists, Achterhaus Ateliergemeinschaft e.V., Ruhrstrasse 88, 22761 Hamburg; all applicants will be contacted with the open call’s results until mid-October 2024.
The apartment size is 55m² and is located on the ground floor. It has two sizeable rooms: one studio with 22m², one bedroom with 21 m², bathroom and kitchen with 10 m² combined. There are windows in each of the bigger rooms which offer good lighting. The apartment is the only living space in the building, all the other rooms are workspaces which are only used during daytime.
