The studio collective Achterhaus Ateliergemeinschaft e.V. offers two fully funded three-month residencies for one visual artist or one artist duo. The residency is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Media Hamburg.
The program provides time and space to develop artistic projects in a focused working environment, a monthly stipend, and opportunities to connect with local artists and Hamburg’s vibrant art scene.
Founded in 2013 by 36 artists, Achterhaus Ateliergemeinschaft is located in the former administrative building of a wallpaper factory in Hamburg’s Bahrenfeld district. The building comprises 25 artist studios and one residential apartment. Situated in a neighborhood undergoing significant transformation, shaped by both industry and residential development, the collective not only provides affordable studio space but also fosters collaboration and exchange across artistic disciplines.
Applications are open to:
Visual artists working in all disciplines
Artists residing outside Germany

Students are not eligible to apply.

Applications will be reviewed by a jury consisting of resident artists and former guest artists. All applicants will be informed of the results by early October 2026.
The residency apartment measures 55 m² and is located on the ground floor.
It consists of:
Studio: 22 m²
Bedroom: 21 m²
Bathroom and kitchen: 10 m² (combined)
Both main rooms have large windows providing ample natural light.
The apartment is the only residential space in the building. All other rooms are artist studios and are generally used only during daytime hours.
